Irish Daily Mirror Comment

Shambolic probe insults blast victims

If anything new emerges from Patrick MacEntee's  authoritative report into the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, it is the abysmal police probe that followed the atrocities.

Handed over to relatives yesterday, it is a grim reminder of Ireland's  bloodiest day of the Troubles - and a damning indictment of what can only be called a botched investigation.

The absence of charges against the murderers condemns the bereaved to a lifetime of questions.

To many of them, this new report was a waste of money and time.

Central to their questions will be the certainty of Northern security force collusion.

While only a few of the main leads could be pursued within the Garda's own jurisdiction this is no excuse.

It is shameful that the original investigation was apparently thrown onto the back burner, dumped after less than four months.

Mr MacEntee's report says there is no connection between collusion and the wholly unprofessional loss of Garda files.

Several people believed to have been involved were identified yet it seems nothing could be done.

That was, and continues to be, felt as a gross insult by the families of the victims.

This is not an issue which will simply go away quietly,
