The Dundalk Democrat, 26 May 2001:

Ludlow relatives have further meeting with minister

by Anne-Marie Eaton

Relatives of murdered Mountpleasant man, Seamus Ludlow, had a further meeting with Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, John O'Donoghue yesterday (Wed.) afternoon in Dublin.

The family had previously spoken with the Minister when the Cabinet met in Ballymascanlon Hotel last week.

Yesterday's meeting was also attended by Minister Dermot Ahern.

Accompanying the family was their solicitor, Mr James MacGuill, and also Jane Winter of British Irish Rights Watch, who compiled a report on the May 1976 murder of the 47-year-old forestry worker, by what is believed to have been a loyalist group.

Seamus Kirk TD, recently asked the Minister when the inquiry into Seamus Ludlow's death would commence and would the inquiry planned be public.

In a written reply, Minister O'Donoghue stated:

"It has been indicated to solicitors acting on behalf of the person concerned that the Government is prepared to have an inquiry into the person's death along the lines of the inquiry which was established initially, under the late Mr Justice Hamilton, into the Dublin/Monaghan bombings.

"To date that proposal has not found favour with the representatives of the relatives.

"In the circumstances, I am considering how best to progress the matter, and I shall put proposals to this end before Government as soon as I am in a position to do so."
